CASE STUDY: We're No Heroes

Cardiff disco-math-pop act We’re No Heroes released their new EP ‘Quiet Colours’ in the summer of 2011 with a Launch in Cardiff.

We handled the PR campaign for the EP on a non existant budget and achieved some great results. It was picked up by 6 music, BBC Radio Wales, The White Room Project and Topshop radio who today have playlisted lead track ‘Empty Beat’

Tom Robinson played: We're No Heroes - Atlantic Hearts

June 15th sees the release of WNH’s second EP Quiet Colours, the title of which is said to reflect the personalities within the group; meek in everyday life, but a powerful force onstage (much like Clark Kent: perhaps they are heroes after all.) The band whittled the four song set down from eight potentials, determined to construct a strong, coherent record which retains the individuality of each of its component parts

The Quiet Colours EP manages to transmit the excitement of their always hugely energetic live shows to the recording studio.

It’s by far and away the best thing the fledgling group have released thus far and hints at greater landmarks yet to be attained.

http://ringmasterreviewintroduces.wordpress.com/2011/07/09/we%E2%80%99re-no-heroes-%E2%80%93-quiet-colours-ep/It seems with the emergence of every new band with something just slightly different to their sound yet another sub-genre is created and labelled and then quickly filled by more bands in the same ilk. Math pop is one of the newer examples and Welsh band We’re No Heroes a fine example and exponent of a style that is when simplified a lighter more accessible form of math rock.

We're No Heroes actively embrace the math pop tag and there is more than an obvious nod to the likes of Foals and the mathier parts of Two Door Cinema Club.http://www.roomthirteen.com/cd_reviews/12049/Were_No_Heroes__Quiet_Colours_EP.html. Since starting out the band has progressed far, moving to the bright lights of Cardiff and establishing themselves within the local scene, aswell as releasing their debut EP 'Crossing Over' for free on February 14th 2010 which has since been downloaded well over 1000 times.

http://indiestep.blogspot.com/2011/07/were-no-heroes-quiet-colours-ep.html

We’re No Heroes entered Ripefruit Recording Studio’s with producers Jordan Andrews in early 2011 to work on their follow up release, resulting in a new four track EP titled 'Quiet Colours' due to hit on on the 15th June it’s seemingly only a matter of time before the hype machine goes nationwide.

For Fans Of: Foals, This Town Needs Guns, New Young Pony Club, and Minus The Bear.

Rather than throw another bog-standard interview their way, we thought we would speak to the band and, in an attempt to find out a little more about their influences, ask them to tell us about their five musical heroes. See what we did there?

Letters new single 'Flash!Lights' released as a free download on the 4th of July! Stream

LETTERS RELEASE NEW SINGLE 'FLASH!LIGHTS' AS A FREE DOWNLOAD ON THE 4TH OF JULY.

LETTERS - Flash! Lights by Soundandvisionpr

Edinburgh's five piece Letters caused quite a stir earlier this year when their dark cello pop, urgent melancholic vocals and ambitious rock instrumentation, saw their first double sided free single 'Grand National / Pipe Dreams' cause a buzz across the UK's media and blogosphere. Scotsman Radar, The Pop Cop, Jim Gellatly, CMU Daily and Ally McCrae’s Radio1 Session in Scotland were among the many voices declaring Letters as the band to watch. The anticipation mounted for their next move, a series of low key gigs and select festival appearances at Wickerman and Rockness followed.

Now they reveal their darker side on new release 'Flash! Lights’. A slow burning anthem that sears itself into your brain though singer Michael Ferguson's emotive refrain; 'set this relic up on fire/its a past life its over’. Its throbbing cello lines, cascading fearsome drum patterns, layered guitar riffs, and grand strings building to crashing crescendos in its final epic minute. In the band's own words...

"Flash! Lights', to paraphrase one of the lyrics in the song, is about feeling dwarfed by the possibilities of time and the panic induced by fear of under achievement. It's about trying to let go of your past and your vices in order that you embrace the things that truly inspire you and ultimately drive you forward, all the while recognising the complete hopelessness that neither of these aforementioned things can exist without the other.

We wanted to write a song that put the fear of God in us, something that can be as scary as the subject matter and I think we've managed to achieve that."

"The hottest new band in Scotland right now." The Pop Cop

"It's rare that such a new band sounds so close to the finished article...fans of acts such as Jimmy Eat World will find much to admire in the pedal-to-the-metal chorus, but there's still plenty of musical meat on the bones.” Scotsman Radar

“An enthralling mix of Frightened Rabbit and Idlewild.” Faded Glamour

"Their tendency to leap on the distortion pedal as songs draw to an end, and my weakness for vocals sung in a Scottish accent, it makes for a winning formula...They could have a very bright future indeed." CMU

Letters will celebrate their new release with a gig at Henry's Cellar Bar on the 7th July. They will also be playing a few select gigs over the Summer including an acoustic show at 'Inspace' as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival on the 24th June and the Solus Tent, Wickerman Festival on the 23rd July. Regards and enjoy the music

South Wales math-pop three piece We're No Heroes release their new EP 'Quiet Colours' on June 15th 2011, in association with At Your Own Risk Events.

Perfecting songs written over a six month period through live performances and rigorous jam sessions, WNHs hit Ripefruit Recordings studio in Cardiff with respected producer Jordan Andrews. The band set about condensing and refining their sound still further, whittling their initial eight demo tracks down to the four strongest songs in the set, piecing them together the finished results sounded more fluid, hanging together as a record, and the best thing the fledgling group have released thus far. 'Quiet Colours EP' features four tracks 'Atlantic Hearts', 'You're An Empty Beat', 'Tigers' & 'Latitude' and will be released digitally worldwide on the 15th of June, whilst simultaneously getting a limited physical release in the UK.

We're No Heroes note that 'each of their songs has its own personality and story, coming together to create one whole.' Some have pointed out that the title of their new EP 'Quiet Colours' is a reflection of the personality of each band member, their meek and geeky image offstage contrasted by their addictively tuneful, powerhouse live sound, each song reflecting a different aspect of the WNHs sonic assault on the senses.
The band formed transatlactically in the summer of 2009 when a practice in a downtown Chicago studio led the Welsh lads to lay down the basic concepts of the WNHs sound. It may have been the influence of the big city or big dreams but each member became ever more excited and focused upon creating something fun and original. The outcome, disco flecked math pop with insatiable four to the floor rhythms, precise guitar riffs and addictive vocal refrains that weave their way into your head and wont let go for days! On their return to the UK the band have progressed rapidly, moving to Cardiff and establishing themselves in the local scene, releasing their debut EP 'Crossing Over' in February 2010, attracting over 1500 online downloads.

Now, We're No Heroes release the follow up 'Quiet Colours' EP on the 15th of June.

Band: Galleries
Label: White
Genre: Indie
Release date: 11th of May

Glasgow four piece Galleries release their new single 'Darkness Coming' on the 11th of May. Launching it with a single launch at Glasgow's Captain’s Rest, alongside other fine bands We See Lights + Letters.

In April, Galleries recorded a set of songs that depict their progression as an act. The first fruits of those sessions arrive in the shape of new single 'Darkness Coming' is both epic and affecting and perhaps Galleries most immediate cut yet.

'Darkness Coming's addictive sound instantly envelops you in it's cinematic wall of noise: of a throbbing rhythm section, guitar licks and hollered backing vocals that shoot across the skies, while at its core the heart stopping, soaring notes of lead singer David McAdam gaze with awe at the stars.

Galleries prepared their debut EP over the course of 2010; refining their sound and live performance before unveiling it to the world. 'Galleries EP' was released as a free download to the public in January 2010, it was followed up by the single Rocket Science.

Galleries have had radio play from BBC Radio 1 Scotland and also performed live on the station, while influential Scottish blogger The Pop Cop was amongst those in the Scottish scene who pinpointed the band as ones to watch enthusing that "Galleries stand head and shoulders above their peers in Glasgow's crowded guitar-band scene."

Galleries recent activities include series of well-received performances at festivals such as Wickerman, and writing their debut album, which is due to, be recorded throughout 2011.

IDEALS sound is sharp, melodic and cinematic, honed through the bands continuous touring across the UK. IDEALS new single ‘Reflections’ broods with an epic majesty the pressure building to shattering crescendos, its throbbing baselines and shifting menacing rhythms are laid bare as you swerve away from your old life down moonlit motorways. While intriguing front man Andew Major sketches out a vivid narrative of brutal self-reflection:

“Reflections is leaving a part of yourself behind you, casting it away on the side of the road. But inevitably that part of you will always be there inside somewhere and gets brought out at the worst times. ”Notes Major, revealing the inspiration behind the track “I just thought it was strange how you as a person are meant to treat the people closest to you (loved ones, family, friends etc) with the most amount of compassion and love but somewhere along a very long line you begin to let out a part of you that you didn’t know existed”

IDEALS were born in Ipswich but formed in London in early 2010 and quickly penned a deal with ambitious London label Intruder Records. By the end of the year they had released 4 singles, Lungs, Love Song, Forever Leisure & Don't Tell Anyone. Over each release they developed their epic, unstoppable sound that filled discos and shattered hearts across the country.  The melancholy remains, but the sweet melodies permeate the surface but the whole sound comes down over you like an almighty waterfall. IDEALS are exhilarating. 2011 is set to be a busy year. Having already played with Pete Doherty and The Automatic, they’ve already completed a UK tour in support of the new release and plan a German tour for June.

IDEALS have six singles slated for this year, the first release 'Significant Other' released in early 2011 ( video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRZWDE5KBWs) was praised by Music Week, Artrocker and played on Steve Lamacq's six music show. Their forthcoming single 'Reflections' will only see their star shoot further into orbit!

ARTIST: THE SPIRES
TRACK TITLE: FIREWORKS
LABEL: INTRUDER RECORDS
RELEASE (FREE DOWNLOAD): OUT NOW
OFFICIAL RELEASE (DIGITAL RETAILERS & LIMITED PHYSICAL) 18th APRIL 2011
Teaming up with producers The Animal Farm and Intruder Records in late 2010 produced three cracking singles, the first of which, Fireworks, is out on 18.04.2011. The Spires new single ‘Fireworks’ is a multi layered carnival of colours, an adrenaline filled floor filling anthem that blurs the boundaries between dance and indie-rock scenes. Bright synth sounds and wired dance beats, are given precise human form not through drum machines but by the electric instrumentation of this three piece. Rhythmically building up the pressure until ‘Fireworks’ explodes into an insatiable disco-rock chorus, fired through with striking guitar licks. ‘Fireworks’ is already receiving enthusiastic blog commentary and BBC Sheffield Introducing support.
The Spires were born at a mental asylum on the outskirts of Sheffield, where lead singer Matt Smith worked as a caretaker. Inspired by his surroundings, Matt put all his energy into riotous, lung bursting performances that soon established The Spires as a must-see live outfit in Sheffield.
With a batch of scratchy home demos and an insane live show, Matt and his band mates Matt Dacey and Matt Pike - The Three Mattsketeers, anyone? - caught the attention of Embrace lead singer Danny McNamara who featured them on his BBC1 show. Support slots with Delphic, festival appearances and a bizarre gig with INXS at Sheffield’s City Hall followed. The gig coincided with unprecedented flooding in the city that day. Biblical? Maybe. Ominous? Certainly.
The Spires completed their first UK tour of toilets in November 2010. “I guess it’s progress. I used to clean up after the loonies. Now I get to play to rooms full of them”, says Matt.
.
Forthcoming shows:
7th April - London, Barfly
19th April - Norwich Arts Centre
21st April - Bury St. Edmunds, LP
22nd April - Leeds, Milo
23rd April - Sheffield, The Leadmill

Ideals - Significant Other

Case Study: Ideals- Significant Other- single campaign

We've worked hard on Ideals
http://www.myspace.com/idealstheband  single campaign over the last few months. Here are some of the results we achived with the help of Intruder records.

Steve Lamacq played Significant Other on his SIxmusic show on the 07/03/1980

INTERVIEWS:

It's interview week on the Devil's blog and what better way to start than with a band that will be one of 2011's bands to watch of the blogosphere cognoscenti. Lead singer and guitarist Andrew Major took time off from preparing for super-stardom to tell the Devil about his favourite artists, his regretful fling with the music (sic) of Limp Bizkit and the little white lies he once told about shoe sizes!

REVIEWS:

Ideals "Musically it’s big, dark and melodramatic with a rich, polished production. Imagine the National fronted by The Editors Tom Smith and you’d be pretty close. This is a great track and apparently the first of six singles to be released this year - I can’t wait for the next!"

The melancholy remains, the sweet melodies permeate the surface but the whole sound comes down over you like an almighty waterfall. IDEALS are exhilarating. 2011 is set to be a busy year. Having already played with Pete Doherty and The Automatic, this coming year is all about the road. More singles will follow and with each release more karaoke pub singers and Madonna wannabe's will be washed away by the cascading IDEALS waterfall.

After just one spin of the dark moody indie rock of Significant Other has me hooked on the Ideals tense yet infectious sound, the dark brooding croon of frontman Andrew Major had me scrambling for the repeat button over and over again, leaving me smitten with the contagious chorus, serrated riffs and pulsating rhythm section.

Significant Other is slightly unsettling, yet it's also addictive and thrilling, it's both edgy and compelling leaving the listener drained yet still begging for more.

Ideals are their way up, they've already been courted by Pete Doherty and The Automatic for gigs, Ideals are going to be the must hear indie band of the year. I suggest you check them out now before they hit the stadiums.

“…If you hear a little voice in the back of your head that’s me and I’ll be screaming…” Andrew, Ideals’ frontman warns, displaying all the sentimental and melancholic tones he can muster. There’s a curse when it comes to imitating the sounds of Joy Division, White Lies or Interpol, on one hand, you’ll be skyrocketed to success faster than Kerry Katona in an Iceland chicken aisle, on the other, you’ll be labelled as dreary and more depressing than anything Nick Clegg may be proposing. Unlike the latter, Ideals seem to have got something right.

‘Significant Other’ is more Robinson’s Concentrated than Tropicana Freshly Squeezed but that’s not a bad thing. There’s disappointment (“if you’re falling down the street in your see-through dress”), love (“I’m your significant other”) and determination (I’ve got spirit and it feels all the same)- like a Tesco sale, Ideals seem to cover many things.

London upstarts Ideals release their new single ‘Significant Other’ this month. Steering a careful course between the twin urges of suffocating introspection and empty catchiness without ever verging too far in either direction, it’s a fine introduction to a promising new band.

http://www.joyzine.org/videos5.html
Despite the usual doom mongers declaring the death of music at every turn, there are actually loads of great bands around that genuinely excite us here at The Beat Surrender. A perfect example for you are Ideals a terrific band who have delivered a great video to accompany their brand new single Significant Others.

The music is, for this track at least, top end U2 brood, jangle n buzz and the lyrics clear the 'boy loses girl' bar with ease.

They have slowly became a favourite with me and they still haven't peaked, they play a brilliant live show and this song is always a highlight. This song is not so much a long way off their debut song, as that too was a superb track. Through the two gifted guitarists to the pulsating rhythm of Simon Wilson’s bass and Ben Ward on the drums they give a stirring and vibrant sound that you want to hear more of.

On the first listen to the new single by London-based band Ideals, you can’t escape a nagging feeling that it’s all been done before. Twin rhythm guitar attack? Yup. Monotone singing style? Check. Melodramatic lyricism? Ho hum. And yet – there is something here that seems to work, and even to mature, when revisited. It’s easy to criticise seemingly formulaic music in the continual search for authenticity. And yet, sometimes, a band following a tried-and-tested recipe can just work, adding up to a force that’s significantly greater than the sum of its parts.

Fancy a musical treat? Well London based Ideals have just that for you with their new single ‘Significant Other’. This follow up to their acclaimed Forever Leisure EP sees them taking their sound further forward with a release that pulls you in and then carries you along on the wave of a pulsating chorus that stays with you long after the song ends. They stand heads above most on this offering and will surely elevate to higher status sooner than later.

Anyone who has ever had the misfortune of clinging on to the ashes of a lost significant will appreciate the angst-ridden heartbreak pounding from the depths of lead singer Andrew Majors. The vocals are powerful and distinctive and draw parallels to that of Editors Tom Smith. The closing repetition of ‘I’m the last one left to change’ feels more like a personal self realisation than a public confession.

Who wants to listen to a bleeding heart ? Ideals however do it reasonably well, although in the originality stakes they try and sneak in distant shades of The Strokes and Interpol,

it’s the slower pace of Significant Other that serves to draw out the finer details of Ideals’ talent. Andrew’s vocals lend the track a powerful atmospheric sound and shows a depth of versatility from the front man. Add to this the excellent guitar riffs that evolve fluidly after every chorus and you have another great single from a wonderfully diverse indie band that stays fresh from start to finish.

Ideals discovered nothing new retracing ways walked by other bands like the Killers or the Bravery, but they walk this way well. In fact to create a good scene, music needs more example of the same genre, revisited in different personal ways, and Ideals belong to a “dark-indie” (forgive me for this awful label) scene with a great sense of melancholic lyrics, monotone singing style and rock pace, I want to underline that because they can appear like a band of depressed boys and this is not the case, they are under the spell of energetic drums and industrious guitars dressed with a veil of melodrama.

Major's vocals are warm and welcoming and his lyrics offer depth to this age old problem. It's an interesting track that will be welcomed by Ideals's fans.

Significant Other plays one song of alternative rock, taking some influence from post punk bands that managed to do something new with pop music.

OK release their new single Lego, which has sparked a massive response grom fans and the Welsh media, as digital download via ITUNES on the 11th of Feb, followed by a limited edition CD release on the 14th of March.

Welsh indie heroes OK release Lego a blast of harmonic sunshine upon a grey music scene, ‘Lego’ showcases OK’s joyous power guitar-pop sound in just under three minutes. The song excels in glistening guitar hooks, disco-filling drum and bass sparring, and heady, addictive vocal refrains that encapsulate a feeling of infatuation, part giddy, part searching for reassurance.“Just tell me if we could fit together /like lego.” Lego is backed by live favourite, the delightful Perfect World.

Lego was recorded by Jordan Andrews at Ripe Fruit studios in Cardiff and mastered by Donal Whelan at Hafod. Lego is the first release from a growing pool of new songs, OK have been working on over the last year, and the first to feature Oli Miles on guitar and Dave Powell on Drums. OK singer and guitarist Joe Paine said,“It was obvious straight away that Lego would be the first single. We were really happy with the way it sounded and are looking forward to people finally hearing it.”
New single Lego is accompanied by a band-produced video, filmed in the band’s own back room, and featuring handmade puppets, gleefully parodying the ecstatic feeling OK generate when playing live.

Despite line up changes within OK since the release of their debut album, 2009’s well-received ‘Under the Weather But Over The Moon,’ OK have held onto their name regardless of its immense impracticalities. “We always loved the name although it's awkward to find us online,” says bass player Adam Barrah, “the band had been going for a while when I joined, so there is a continuity of OK that I love being a part of.’

Lego is the first in a series of releases slated for the coming year. ‘”There are more songs waiting to be recorded” says OK’s Joe Paine, “some of which will be recognisable to people who have seen us live and some of which are completely new and unheard.”

Thank you for your time!

Letters release their new double a sided single ‘Grand National/Pipe Dreams’ as a free to download single on the 16th February.

Letters will launch their single at Henry’s Cellar bar, Edinburgh on the 16th February, Letters have also just been asked to support hot One Little Indian act Wild Palms at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow on Friday the 4th of March! These dates will be followed by a full Scottish tour in March 2011, with a view to expanding into shows in the rest of the UK in April and May.

Letters’ new double a-sided single is the first addictive taste of material from this utterly compelling new Scottish act. Letters dark cello pop-noise emerges from lack of vitamin D, poorly heated flats and glittering pubs; underscored by a sharp wit, fierce intelligence and unabashed love for the frivolous decadence of great pop music.

Letters were born amidst the ruins of desolate Scottish fishing towns and Edinburgh city centre bohemia in the winter of 2010. Five strong, Mikey, Georgie, Dougie, Kerr and Ed occupy their ranks.

First single ‘The Grand National’ is propelled by an urgent rhythm section, sewn with distinctive cellos, elastic basslines, and threaded with Michael Ferguson’s evocative, twitching vocals that draw vivid pictures of a childhood spent growing up in a dead-end estate, shifting from Orwellian microcosms to late night conversations that go nowhere then diving head first into waves of guitars and life affirming chorus lines. While the flipside ‘Pipe Dreams’ is an all-together different animal, initially decidedly more stripped back its throbbing bass and stabbing cello notes are shot through wide screen ambition into entangled male/female melodies that build and crash into melancholic refrains, vocalising that endless yearning for unattainable dreams. (“I seem to bring you down/Pipe dreams to sink around the town”)

Keen to avoid the tired clichés that sway albatross like around the necks of their checkered clad peers, Letters speak with a unique voice and arresting intensity, shot through with verve only the fearlessness of youth and fear of age can generate. Reckless arrogance, failed dreams, desperate boredom and childhood nostalgia coalesce here, bound together by the philosophical glue of Moran, Izzard and Hicks.
Letters will follow up this debut digital single release with a full physical EP in April 2011.

TRACK TITLE: Significant Other.

LABEL: Intruder.

Release (SOFT) 25TH DECEMBER 2010.

RELEASE (LIVE) 21ST OF FEBRUARY

Andrew Major makes clear statements of intent. He can be a difficult soul. It is all quiet on the outside but the cerebral jukebox has Transformer and Marquee Moon on shuffle. You might like him. He has a lot to say for a quiet man.

His band are called IDEALS. They live in London Town where Andrew fills his days observing the subversive and filling up note books with the quirks of human beings. He then distills these notes into songs. His words are difficult and often provocative, just like Andrew.

The story is simple. You were my girlfriend and now you are not. I am not happy. Some just cry into their beer until it goes way. Others can be more reactionary. Andrew Major thinks reactionary is more interesting.

Produced by Ville Leppenan for Animal Farm,(At the Drive In, Alkaline Trio,Less than Jake) Significant Other is as unsettling as it is beautiful. Pete Doherty likes IDEALS. That is why he wanted them on his shows. The Automatic like IDEALS. That's why they wanted them on their shows.

Time is relative. Good songs are timeless.

Andrew Major can be difficult but you might like him. He has a lot to say.

Edinburgh's LETTERS to support Wild Palms at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut (4th of March)& Approved by CMU music industry bible!

Hi

If you hadn't noticed I'm working with new Edinburgh band called Letters, their dark cello indie rock is enthralling me at the moment. Two bits of great new news surrounding the band at the moment, whose two tracks online are delighting those in the blogging and podcasting worlds, yesterday they were APPROVED by the music industry Bible CMU here's what they had to say

"Edinburgh five-piece Letters formed early last year, instantly marking their guitar pop sound out from the rest by adding a cellist to the line-up. This adds a darker element to their sound, which, coupled with their tendency to leap on the distortion pedal as songs draw to an end, and my weakness for vocals sung in a Scottish accent, it makes for a winning formula."
